Modern Distros - or bleeding edge

When joy turns to sadness. Ubuntu Hardy is so current, it sometimes doesn't work.

I'm still feeling the manic/depressive swings with the new Hardy install on my trust ancient Fedora Core 2 box. Sure, compiz and the sphere thing are cool. Sure, screenlets are cool. Sure, not locking up for no reason is, well, cool.

What's not cool? All the little bugs:

  • On one machine (yeah - mass update) hda-intel (that's the sound driver) doesn't work. Known problem, no fix that works for me (have not tried the "clean install" fix yet!.)
  • On two machines I can't get synce to work reliably. After a manual build of the usb-rndis-lite driver at least I can use (alright - it's actually easier to use) my phone as a modem again.

I think I've finally nailed down my dansguardian/squid performance issues, although I'm not entirely sure what I've done to fix em.
