Moving on Teh Intertubes
Today is the day... well the first day, anyway. Comcast is going to install the business class service
If all goes well, I will run with DSL + Cable for a day or so while the DNS entries update over the weekend. Come Monday I will cut over fully to cable. By the end of the week I'll cancel DSL.
Why the switch? I love Sonic.net. I've been happy with the service. Ecstatic, really. They give "near business class" service, at top DSL speeds, at a fair but hardly discount price. The problem for me is, I live a bazillion miles away from the CO. So I am getting my great DSL speed (6M/.8) via a Remote Terminal. Cool, but pretty much that means I am going as fast over these copper wires as I ever will.
Comcast has a business class and a residential class product. The business class, with 5 static IPs, no caps, no throttles, etc, is pretty much the same cost as Sonic.net's DSL. As of 3/10, the speeds are 12/2, plus the speedboost. Yeah, 12/2. I need the 2 more then then 12, but I'll take the 12 as well.
Time to give it a go and see how it works.
Oh, and I guess I could have tried AT&T Uverse, but they don't seem to offer anything that is business class level (static IPs, faster uplinks, better support) and frankly I really think they've got to be compressing the daylights out of their video streams.
I actually found this site
I actually found this site from DSLReports on your free wifi machine offer.
I would like to ask how is Comcast, is this website hosted on Comcast as well? I've been considering hosting a server at my office instead of using a shared host and I'm down to two choices, (both of which you have used), Comcast and Sonic.net.
May I ask how is the connection on both and is there any "cap" on both when you are hosting servers? Is it also allowed by their ToS.
Thank you for your time,
Steven
yes, this is hosted on the comcast business line
I'm finding it to be pretty nice - much better speeds if you're able to get 12/2 or 22/5. No other issues, it just works.
Regarding the caps, comcast does have wording in the AUP that suggests they have some idea of the kind of usage they expect from "business class" users, and can decide you've used too much. Its not clear at all what "too much" is.
I've added a bandwidth monitor to my munin suite so I can track usage month to month, I'm interested to see what its like myself!
Edit: I was with Sonic for 5 years, they were (and are) great. If you happen to be in an area where they are rolling out adsl2, and can get it from them, they're pretty competitive on speed and price. Their 6/.8 Extreme DSL package is great, but the speeds are hard to live with if you can get twice as much or more from someone else.
Bandwidth for April
Looks like total bandwidth used in April was right around 100GB. That's right about where I expected. Sheesh, 100GB. That's a lot of data.
12/2 speeds in
Got reprovisioned to the 12/2 speeds last night.
Wowsa.
That's the initial speed. Sustained speeds are less but, still pretty peppy.
Well, it helps
If you remember to update the DNS for www.schettino.us
Sorry about that! Now you should be able to get to www.schettino.us too. Whoops.
Update #2
Ok, so DNS updates are propagated, and all is pretty well. Install was Friday afternoon, and the tech (who did a nice job in the install) had some trouble getting the profile with my statics loaded into the modem. Once that was done we did some light testing and he was off to his next appointment.
Saturday morning I got to spend more quality time testing the thing, and it sure seemed that after the "speedboost" I was running more like 6bit down, vs the 12 I should be seeing. Uplink was solid at 1.8mbit, which again seemed a tad slow vs the 2mbit I was supposed to be seeing..
So before 8am on Saturday, I called in to the business tech support.... and actually talked to two people. That's encouraging. Level 1 guy was able to give me my customer ID (after I read him the MAC address off my modem ;) ) I had never actually received that. He also verified my modem was provisioned with the 6/1 rate code... and that I should have 12/2 - but I needed to talk to customer service, which indeed was closed on the weekend. Cool, good to know, no BS. I asked about the process for getting reverse DNS set up for the schettino.us IP, and that got me zipped over to level 2, where a nice lady set that up in a few seconds.
So, overally on the first weekend, I am pretty pleased. Speeds are already beating my beloved Sonic.net both down and up - having nearly a full Mbit (100KB) additional uplink makes a huge difference already for my web server and email, and the speedboost 24Mbit down is actually engaged for most light use. Looking forward to getting the full 12/2 on monday, will update then.
So far, business class seems like a winner.
yep... we're up on it now
Seems to be working...
